Bariatric Surgery Procedures

Because most of the individuals who come to WeightWise are eligible to undergo one of several bariatric surgery procedures including the Lap-Band, Gastric Sleeve, or the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass procedure, we feel it is our responsibility to educate them about the choices on the journey toward wellness. We do realize that, in this situation we cannot speak for the patient to determine which procedure will work best for his or her lifestyle. Through conversations with the surgeons and the WeightWise Team, patients can learn more about the options that are available. In addition, patients can also use the information below that highlights some of the benefits and risks associated with each bariatric surgery:

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery

  • Well studied procedure that is the most popular bariatric surgery in the U.S.
  • Fast weight loss with most patients averaging 65 to 80 percent of excess weight lost in one to two years after surgery.
  • Iron, B-12, and calcium are malabsorbed after this operation, simple daily vitamins will maintain normal levels.
  • The bypassed portions of the stomach and intestine cannot be easily seen using X-ray or endoscopy if there are problems, such as ulcers, bleeding, or malignancy.
  • “Dumping syndrome” can occur when a patient eats too much sugar or large amounts of food. While it is not a serious health risk, the results are very unpleasant. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, weakness, sweating, and faintness. Some people are unable to eat sugary foods after surgery.
  • Co-morbidities (associated medical problems) such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, joint pain, and heartburn are improved or resolved in more than 90 percent of patients.

Lap Band Surgery

  • Newer technology, not as long of follow up as the RnYGB
  • Less invasive procedure with lower surgical risks and smaller risks of death or prolonged hospitalization.
  • Slower, more steady weight loss. Patients generally settle at their final weight about two years after surgery.
  • No dumping syndrome.
  • Long term (non-reactive) plastic material in body.
  • Reversible.
  • Adjustable (during physician office visits) to accommodate your customized weight loss needs.
  • No rearrangement of anatomy.
  • More follow-up required.
  • More dietary compliance required.
  • Long-term weight loss from 40 to 60 percent of excess weight.
  • Weight loss of one to two pounds per week after surgery.
  • Vitamin and mineral deficiencies possible, which can be prevented by taking supplements.

The Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band may be the optimal operation if the patient has limited reserve (many serious chronic medical problems) or if the patient primarily is an overeater at mealtime only.

Gastric Sleeve

  • Newest of the operations offered by WeightWise
  • Three years of data available
  • Weight loss is more rapid (like with RnYGB), more complete (like the RnYGB) than with the LAGB.
  • Vitamin supplementation required
  • Remove 75% of stomach
  • Permanent
  • At three years, looks just as effective as RnYGB with less complications
  • Most insurance plans do not cover this operation at this time
