Post Op Instructions

After laparoscopic weight loss operations, the following general post op instructions apply:

  • You will be placed on a very strict diet for the first two weeks as the operation heals. You will be educated about the diet before the operation and before discharge from the hospital.
  • Practically no limit on the amount of physical activity exists. Activity will be limited by discomfort (minimal) and the ability to drink two liters of fluids per day.
  • You can shower immediately after your operation (pat the wounds dry).
  • For the first two weeks, if you will be riding in a automobile, airplane, boat, or train for more than an hour at a time, you will need to take a break each hour to walk.
  • Upon discharge from the hospital, each patient is given a card with the cell phone numbers of the surgeons so that if questions arise, the patient can easily contact them.
  • Your home medications will be reviewed and if need be, altered before discharge.

Other instructions or restrictions may apply in particular cases.

Remember:
1. The operation is a tool – a tool to help you change your lifestyle.
2. Exercise is very important – 30 minutes 5 days/week – walking is perfect early after operation.
3. Eat slowly and don’t drink with meals. (Post Op Diet Instructions)
4. Support groups are very important – your friends, family and coworkers may have the best intentions, but they will have difficulty understanding the changes you are undergoing. Our team, along with the support groups, are the best “rechargers” of you mental and physical “batteries.”  Oklahoma & South Kansas Support Group Resources
