Post Op Diet

Maintaining the recommended diet following surgery is crucial to the patient’s success and long-term improved health. The initial post op diet will be extremely limited as the new stomach pouch requires time to heal. The diet progresses over four to six weeks to one consisting of small amounts of regular food, primarily protein and nonstarchy vegatables. At least two liters (64 ounces) of noncarbonated, noncaloric liquids are required each day.

Remember:

  • Eat slowly (20-25 min per small meal)
  • Don’t drink with meals or for one hour after meals
  • Take very small bites, chew thoroughly
  • Swallow, then wait, ensure your pouch did not fill before taking another bite
  • Eat protein first, then non starchy vegetables
  • Drink 2 liters (64oz) or more each day, non-caloric, non-carbonated
  • Drink small amounts continuously to reach goal of 2 liters/day
  • No BREAD, PASTA, RICE, POTATOES – forever
